POSH shops are outpricing a town with snobbery, according to residents.

Biggin Hill residents used to have the choice of Morrisons or Iceland for grocery shopping.

But Morrisons has become a Waitrose store and Iceland, which closed down, is to become a Marks & Spencer Simply Food shop.

These changes have not been welcomed by some of the area's residents who believe the shops do not offer enough choice and are too expensive for most Biggin Hill families.

Father-of-three Kent Sadler said: "Now if my children want a variety of boxed fruit drinks for their school lunch or a children's meal they can have sushi instead.

"If my wife wants loose, fresh Brussel sprouts she can buy pre-packed, pre-prepared ones at three times the price."

The 47-year-old resident of Kings Road added: "It can be best summed up by the fact you can now park outside Waitrose on a Saturday morning and you could never park outside Morrisons."

Emma Bateman, 32, of Sunningvale Avenue, says she cannot afford to buy food at Waitrose for herself and her nine-year-old son on her nurse's wage.

She said: "I like a bit of Marks & Spencer food at Christmas and nip into Waitrose for a pint of milk but no way could I afford to do a big shop there.

"If I can't afford it, how could people on a pension or single parents on benefits shop there?

"Are we outpricing Biggin Hill with pure snobbery?"

A Waitrose spokesman said: "We are committed to providing choice for our customers and ensuring we deliver by meeting their requirements.

"We check the prices of hundreds of our most popular items on a regular basis to make sure Waitrose customers get consistently good value for money.

"This is shown by everyday items such as semi-skimmed milk and loose bananas being among our top sellers.""
