A COUPLE made a roadside delivery after their baby was born in the front seat of their Renault Scenic.

Sue and Matt Haw, of First Avenue, Bexleyheath, were driving to hospital when their daughter arrived.

Mrs Haw, 32, said: "My contractions began at 2pm. An hour later, my waters broke and we were getting in the car. Eight minutes later, she was born."

The couple were minutes away from Queen Mary Hospital, Sidcup, on March 18, when it became clear they were not going to make it.

Housewife Mrs Haw said: "As we drove past Danson Park, I had the urge to push, then she was just coming out. I told Matt, you're going to have to pull over, she's coming'."

Mr Haw, an accountant, pulled over on Penhill Road and dashed around the car to the passenger side, just in time to see his daugher born.

Mrs Haw said: "She was pink and cried a little, so we knew she was OK. We did call 999 but they couldn't find our location so we drove the rest of the way to hospital."

The proud parents wrapped the new baby, Rebecca Jane, in a towel and were met by a medical team, who cut the umbilical cord.

The youngster, who weighed 6lb 13oz, is now at home with her proud parents and 20-month-old brother Ben.

Mr Haw, 30, said: "People say we should have called her Penny after the road she was born on but we just like the name Rebecca."
