CAPTAIN Ahab and his crew are sailing into Greenwich this week, in a stage version of Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Considered by many as one of the greatest American novels, this 19th-century tale of the epic battle between Ahab and the whale has its roots in fact.
In the 1820s a whaling ship, The Essex, was sunk by an 80 tonne sperm whale. During the same period a rare albino whale, known as Mocha Dick, was sighted off the south American island of Mocha.
Captain Ahab is played by Owen Aaronovitch, best known as former Coronation Street villain Jon Lindsay.
Moby Dick, until April 1, Greenwich theatre, tickets £16-£20/£14-£18 concs, box office 020 8858 7755.
