A DEVOTED couple married for 64 years managed to renew their wedding vows just days before one of them died.
Elizabeth and James Mealings, both aged 85, celebrated their wedding anniversary with a service of renewal in the chapel at Greenwich and Bexley Cottage Hospice.
The service was conducted by the Rev Colin Terry, vicar of All Saints Church, Belvedere.
Mrs Mealings had been in the hospice for a brief stay but died from cancer just four days after the ceremony.
The couple, who lived in Tavistock Road, Welling, were married in Rotherhithe and had two sons and four grandchildren.
Their sons, as well as staff and other patients attended the ceremony, which was suggested by Mr Terry.
