A MUCH-LOVED teacher who was a dedicated environmentalist, will be remembered in this year's Bexley Environmental Challenge competition.

Clive Pugh, 49, taught history, geography and IT at the Howbury Referral Unit in Slade Green.

He had been with the unit for eight years when he died suddenly during last summer's school holidays, a week before he turned 50.

But it was his commitment to the environment which captured his pupils' imagination and a new category has been added this year to the challenge competition as a tribute to him.

The Clyde Pugh award will be given to individuals who have helped improve the environment in the education sector.

The unit also plans a memorial garden in his name.

Schools and community groups can enter an environmental project in any one of five different categories in this year's challenge.

There is a separate competition for businesses.

Last year more than 40 organisations took part with the chance of winning a trophy and up to £800 cash.
