AFTER enduring disrupted evenings and traffic jams while a new anti-skid road surface was laid, residents have now discovered the work has got to be done all over again.

Andrew Baldwinson, 43, of Alexandra Road, Erith, was furious when he discovered the surface laid outside KFC's new drive-thru restaurant on the corner of Manor Road, would have to be re-laid.

The surface was one of the planning conditions imposed by Bexley Council and had to be put down before the restaurant could open.

Despite being laid only last month, the surface is already bubbling up and peeling away.

Mr Baldwinson contacted Bexley Council and was disgusted to be told contractors for KFC had been warned it was likely to happen because of the unsuitable weather when it was laid.

But in order to open its restaurant last month, the surface had to be in place.

The council will check the state of the surface next month, when the weather improves.

Mr Baldwinson, who has two young children, said when it was first laid, contractors were on site until 11pm at night.

He added: "Presumably we are looking at complete chaos if they have to do it all again."

A spokesman for KFC said: "The council agreed when road surfacing was complete, the anti-skid surface could be laid no sooner than 30 days later, but we could open in the meantime.

"The council changed its mind and insisted the anti-skid surface should go down immediately for safety reasons, and due to adverse weather conditions, it will have to be re-laid."

A council spokesman says it advised KFC's contractor the surface was "unlikely to adhere to health-and-safety conditions".

They added: "The contractor went ahead laying the surface at an unsuitable time knowing the work would need to be redone if it wasn't to a satisfactory standard."
