TWO hundred and fifty children took part in a balloon race to mark the opening of a £700,000 all-weather sports pitch.

The prep-school children from Colfe's School, Hornpark Lane, Lee, released the blue and yellow balloons into the sky on Monday.

The balloon race was followed by a hockey and football tournament with other primary and secondary schools.

Old Colfeian and school's development committee chairman Ron Harryman, handed out medals to the winners as part of the opening ceremony.

The all-weather pitch marked the culmination of three years' fundraising on the part of the school's development campaign.

The school recognised a need for a sports field for both boys and girls in the centre of the school.

Headteacher Richard Russell said: "The pitch has brought sport into the heart of the school community.

"I'm grateful to all who have given donations to the campaign and made the project a reality."
