BUSINESS leaders and an MP are heading a campaign to bring a Crossrail station to Woolwich.
The current route for the Crossrail line, which will link west and east London, currently includes a station at Abbey Wood but not at Woolwich.
But now Greenwich and Woolwich MP Nick Raynsford is backing the CS4W (Crossrail Station for Woolwich) group.
The campaign is headed up by business leaders, including Sir Bob Scott, head of the South London Business group.
CS4W believes a station in Woolwich will bring extra investment and a more skilled workforce to the town.
Mr Raynsford said: "The benefits to the community through bringing prosperity back to Woolwich will far outweigh the costs."
Greenwich Council has already stated its preference for Crossrail stations in both Abbey Wood and Woolwich.
The line, which runs from Maidenhead, Berkshire, to Abbey Wood via central London, is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
