MORE than 400 of the borough's residents tried to avoid paying for a television licence last year.

The 423 people risked a criminal conviction and a fine of upto £1,000 plus court costs.

Atotal of 56,916 Londoners failed to buy a licence last year.

This is more than one tenth of the total number caught across the country.

A TV Licensing South East spokesman said: "Licence dodgers in Bromley have really let the side down and they are the biggest losers, as they face stiff penalties if caught without a valid TV licence."

Newham had the highest number of television licence evaders at 4,249.
