I FIND myself getting more and more enraged on the roads. Why do so many motorists not know how to drive on the motorway?

Is it just me or have the rules changed and I am not aware? Have we suddenly adopted the American freeway mentality of driving wherever the hell we like and at whatever speed?

I am talking specifically, of course, about using the lanes. As far as I know, the lanes should be used for overtaking.

You should drive in the slow lane until you come across a car you need to overtake, overtake it and then move back into the slow lane. If there are too many cars in the slow lane, use the middle lane, overtake in the fast lane and then move back into the middle lane, eventually moving back into the slow lane when possible.

Am I wrong? If you are in the middle lane and a car is sitting on your shoulder in the slow lane, move over, you are in the wrong lane. Why is it people sit in lanes like ducks in a frozen pond?

People get on the motorway, jump into the lane they feel comfortable in and that's it for the whole journey be it one or 20 junctions to hell with what's happening around them.

What's the matter with these people? I wonder at people's knowledge of the rules. I think we need some sort of national campaign to remind us all of basic road conventions.

On this point, when are road rules going to be updated? The 70mph limit on motorways is so outdated.

It does seem as if some drivers are of the opinion if 70mph is the fastest you can go then that's what speed you should be going in the fast lane, 60mph in the middle lane and 50mph or below in the slow lane.

This of course is an idiotic way of looking at the lanes but I am sure this is why you get so many sitting ducks.

Another thing sending me into a frenzy is the complete lack of understanding of stopping distances. So many drive right up your backside it doesn't matter if you have been sensible and left a suitable distance between yourself and the car in front this means nothing if you have got some cretin driving so close they can hear your radio. Don't they understand how dangerous it is? Are they completely without sense? And if so, what the hell are they doing driving?

I think we should be tested more than once during our driving lives. If I am still driving at 65, I will have been driving for 48 years using knowledge I gained at 17, never having revisited the Highway Code.

Surely someone somewhere needs to check I know what I am doing?
