YOUNGSTERS took a trip to a library to learn about the bear essentials of reading.
Under-fives from across the borough visited Catford Library, Rushey Green, Catford, to meet the Bookstart bear.
The bear is being employed by council bosses to encourage more children to get into reading at an earlier age.
As part of the scheme, children receive a sticker each time they borrow a book from the borough's libraries.
For every six stickers they collect, each child receives one of four illustrated certificates.
Lewisham Mayor Steve Bullock says the scheme is vital because it helps "young people learn to love books".
