ONLY the sound of silence could be heard during a fundraising school assembly.
The 275 children from Sutton-at-Hone Primary School, Church Road, Dartford, were hoping to raise more than £1,800 for charity by taking part in the Big Hush.
The sponsored silence was organised nationally by Macmillan Cancer Relief to support those affected by the disease.
Deputy headteacher Debbie Hockey said: "Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, whether it is a parent, a grandparent or a teacher.
"The Big Hush is a great way for children to raise money."
During the previous five years the school has raised a total of £7,000 for Macmillan.
More than 130,000 children took part in the January 27 event throughout the country.
