HERITAGE campaigners have promised to continue their fight to save an historic wharf even though it looks set for demolition.
Last week planning chiefs approved Wimpey Homes' plan to knock down Borthwick Wharf, Deptford, and replace it with 247 new flats.
But campaign group the Creekside Forum is hoping John Prescott will help them in their battle to preserve the 1930s' riverside landmark.
The proposal still has to be approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and the forum hopes Mr Prescott will find in its favour.
Forum secretary John Taylor said: "It was a disappointing result but this is not the end of the road.
"Borthwick is a distinctive building which embodies Deptford's great commercial past.
"Knocking it down would destroy this rich heritage."
Last week News Shopper reported how Deptford-based businesswoman Chris Carey wants to save the wharf by using it as a base for her recycling firm.
Mrs Carey was one of a host of objectors to speak at the meeting, held at Woolwich Town Hall, on January 24, but the planning board voted to approve the Wimpey plan.
