SOUTHFLEET WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

Despite the hustle and bustle of December's Christmas shopping, 33 members and four visitors welcomed Mary Longhurst and her team to Southfleet WI on December 12. Everyone present joined in as she entertained us with Call my Bluff' based on the TV show. We tried to figure out which of the three meanings was the correct one, it was a very enjoyable evening.

On the following Monday, 20 members watched the district Christmas concert held at the Village Hall, our own Val Memory became Phone-a-fairy' which was very funny and together with Josie Brown gave us an insight to the WI in 1915 and the present day. Doreen Hathaway who organised the evening gave a reading and also took part in Perry Streets version of a childrens nativity play. where all the cast were mature ladies playing six year old, and were brilliant.

On January 9, the speaker for the evening was Val Memory who gave an illustrated talk on Lands End to John O'Groats and beyond, covering the Isles of Scilly, Fair Isle and the Shetlands. The scenery looked beautiful but bleak on Fair Isle and personally I would not get on that tine Plane! The Isles of Scilly looks more accessible and has many sites worth a visit, it was a very interesting talk and the evening passed very quickly - well done Val.

The speaker on February 13 will be Tom Hart Dyke on Lullingstone Castle his World Garden' and being kidnapped. It looks as if it will be a very absorbing evening and an outing to Lullingstone is being organised by the District WI in May. If you would like to come along to hear Tom Hart Dyke in February it will only cost you £1, who knows you might even join us on a permanent basis? You will certainly be made very welcome.

Southfleet WI meets on the second Monday of each month at Southfleet Village Hall, Dale Road at 7.30pm.
