Darren Spurden asks: I have applied for about six jobs and haven't even got to the interview stage. I sent an updated CV off on every occasion and still no luck.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances?

Managing director of Compass Personnel recruitment Trish MacKinnon answers: The very fact you have taken the time and trouble to enquire as to how you might improve your chances of success, illustrates commitment to reaching goals a quality much sought after by future employers.

My initial advice, would be to seek out as much help as you can in your job search. Your first port of call should be Prospects Connexions who provide a free information and guidance service.

Be sure to register with the employment service or a recruitment agency in the area you wish to work.

We recruiter's are not only here to assist you in finding the perfect job, but also in helping you be as desirable a candidate as possible.

When you have sent a CV, bear in mind employers may have a fair few applications to look at. Check your progress with a follow up call, this will show your enthusiasm for the job and jog the employer's memory of who you are.

Are you ready for promotion but not sure how to get it?

Do you work at a computer all day and want to find out what breaks you're entitled to?

Or, do you want to know the best way into a management role?
