HOUSE BLAZE: Firefighters took three hours to put out a house fire in Fox Lane, Keston, last Saturday night. The residents were able to get outside safely when the fire occurred at about 8.40pm and nobody was injured. A fire investigation unit is looking into the cause of the blaze.

CASH FOR CUT-OUTS: Panto lovers helped the Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley, raise £525 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by bidding on cut-outs of stars from the show. Former Boyzone star Stephen Gateley, who played Dandini, was the most popular with the winning fan paying £150.

RESCUED: A 95-year-old woman was rescued from her home in Westmoreland Road, Bromley, after a frying pan caught fire. Her home help called the fire brigade just after noon yesterday when she arrived at the woman's home, which was filled with smoke.

LIGHTING UP: Nearly one in four people in the borough smoke, according to newly- released Government figures. The statistics show 24 per cent of Bromley residents are regular smokers, six per cent lower than the London average.

STARLING SIGHTINGS: The starling is the most commonly seen bird in the borough, a new survey has revealed. Research carried out by the RSPB shows the starling is just ahead of the blue tit and the house sparrow.
