THE borough's top councillor says he is worried about the impact of Ken Livingstone's proposed council tax increases.

The London Mayor wants to raise his share, or precept, of the council tax by 16 per cent.

If this is approved, Bromley residents in Band D properties would see the amount they pay to the Mayor and the Greater London Authority (GLA) rise by £42, from £255 to £297.

Bromley residents in Band D properties already pay 23.3 per cent of their council tax bills to the Mayor and the GLA.

Council leader Councillor Stephen Carr said: "It is hard to understand at a time when the Government is threatening to cap local authorities who do not control their spending there is no similar brake on the spending powers of the Mayor."

The Mayor's final draft budget for 2006/07 will be presented to Greater London Authority on February 15.

Bromley Council will set its bills for the coming 12 months on March 20.
