AS WELL being the place to catch the latest productions, Catford's Broadway Theatre is well worth a visit to see a new and vibrant art exhibition.
The collection, entitled Chrysalis, contains a variety of works by German artist Maria Strutz, including prints, linocuts, watercolours and acrylics.
Maria studied painting and sculpture in Germany and went on to take a degree in theatre design at Saint Martin's Art College in London.
The artist says the theme of this collection is transformation, the journey into the underworld and re-emergence.
Bears are a feature in some of the pictures.
Maria explains: "Bears to me represent hibernation, retreating into the darkness and coming back and out, leaner, transformed, with young ones."
She cites Picasso's animal pictures as an influence and says: "My work with animals is not about pretty, cute and cuddly' but about exploring the depth and complexity and meaning of animals."
Chrysalis exhibition, until March 16, Broadway Theatre Gallery, Catford Broadway, free admission, call for opening times, 020 8690 0002.
