Government tables have shown a four per cent rise in the number of Lewisham pupils gaining five or more A* to C grade GCSEs over the past year.
The improvement means the borough's schools have helped an additional 85 pupils gain at least five GCSEs at A* to C grade.
In 2004/5, the borough saw 49.4 per cent of its pupils achieve five or more top grade GCSEs 6.6 per cent below the national average.
Government figures also reveal six of Lewisham's 11 secondary schools achieved Value Added scores above the national average.
These scores are calculated by comparing the performance of children at Key Stage 2, age seven to 11, and Key Stage 4, age 14 to 16, and shows how schools are helping children meet their potential.
Cabinet member for children and young people Councillor Katy Donnelly said: "I am delighted for all the pupils and staff at Lewisham schools who have put in such hard work to get these excellent results."
