THREE MPs have given their backing to a campaign to bring Crossrail to Woolwich.

Greenwich Council wants to see the proposed Crossrail route, which will link west and east London, changed to include a station at Woolwich.

The current route includes a station at Abbey Wood but council bosses believe an additional station at Woolwich would help it become a major transport hub.

In a commons debate on Crossrail last week, Greenwich and Woolwich MP Nick Raynsford argued there is a "very strong regeneration case" for a Woolwich station.

Two other MPs John Austin (Erith and Thamesmead) and Clive Efford (Eltham) have also added their backing to the campaign.

Greenwich Council says Crossrail and the new DLR station could bring 6,000 new jobs to Woolwich.

Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said: "There is no sensible reason not to include a Woolwich station on what is London's biggest transport development in more than a century."
