DARKNESS Into Light is the theme of a concert by the Bromley Symphony Orchestra this weekend. The programme opens with Pohjola's Daughter by Sibelius, based on an ancient Finnish legend in which an old magician tries to woo a beautiful young maiden.
The orchestra is also celebrating Shostakovich's centenary year with his Concerto No 1, featuring young violin soloist Alex Alfia.
This work aptly illustrates the concert's theme.
It begins darkly and after a subdued slow movement with one of the composer's warmest melodies, ends in a festive finale.
The concert also includes Act 2 of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet.
BSO concert, January 21, Ravensbourne School, Hayes Lane, Bromley, 7.45pm, 020 8464 5869.
