SUGGESTIONS Greenwich Council has plans to widen Knee Hill in Abbey Wood have been denied.

Action Group Against the Bridge, a Bexley residents' pressure group opposed to the Thames Gateway Bridge, says the plans were revealed in an updated document on the bridge public inquiry issued in December.

It says Bexley Council stated Greenwich had informally said it would be looking for cash from the money set aside by Transport for London for traffic mitigation, to widen and straighten the currently narrow, rural hill.

But on Monday a Greenwich Council spokesman told News Shopper: "The council has absolutely no plans to widen Knee Hill."

The borough boundary between Greenwich and Bexley runs down the middle of Knee Hill, and the road is bordered on either side by woodland.

Bexley Council cabinet member for transport Councillor Daniel Francis said any plan to widen the road would be completely unacceptable to Bexley.

He said he understood Greenwich might want footways but it would mean taking some of the woodland.

Cllr Francis said all five London boroughs affected by the Thames Gateway Bridge have to agree how the mitigation money is spent.

Action group member Jacqui Wise says they have failed to get assurance from London Mayor Ken Livingstone Bostal Woods, Lesnes Abbey Woods and Bostall Heath, next to Knee Hill, would not be affected by the bridge plans.
