PROPOSALS to demolish a Victorian church and replace it with flats have been criticised by conservationists.

Bromley-based Broomleigh Housing Association wants to knock down the Woolwich Congregational Church, Rectory Place, Woolwich, and replace it with 13 flats.

The one and two-bedroom flats would provide accommodation for key workers such as police officers and doctors.

But the Greenwich Conservation Group is unhappy about the potential loss of the historic church.

Committee member Phillip Binns said: "We very much regret the loss of such a wonderful Victorian building.

"We feel the plans represent an overdevelopment of the site, particularly in relation to the other houses in the area."

The plans were approved, subject to legal agreements, by a Greenwich Council planning committee on January 4.
