A ROAD safety campaigner has blasted the council's efforts to reduce accidents at a notorious blackspot.
Jim Holder says Bexley Council's decision to put in a roundabout at the so-called suicide junction' in Sidcup has proved to be a "complete waste of money".
He claims drivers are still not slowing down and says the junction remains a "death waiting to happen".
A year ago, Bexley Council agreed to build a mini-roundabout at the junction, between Halfway Street, Willersley Avenue and Hollies Avenue, Sidcup.
Lamorbey Residents' Association chairman Mr Holder, 70, claims there have been around 250 reported accidents there in the past 20 years.
He initially welcomed the new roundabout but is now dismayed a flat roundabout has been put in, without a ridge or any other deterrent to stop motorists driving over it.
He said: "It is not a roundabout. It is a blob of tarmac with white lines which looks like it has come from outer space.
"Lazy people are just driving over it, so the junction is still as dangerous as it always was.
"There is still a death here waiting to happen. We feel let down by the council."
The work cost £130,000 in total, with £70,000 of the money coming from a Transport for London grant.
Mr Holder, who wants to see traffic lights at the junction, added: "It is a complete and utter waste of money.
"Motorists have to be treated like idiots. There needs to be something to physically stop them, otherwise they will just take short cuts."
A Bexley Council spokesman says it had to get special authorisation from the Department for Transport to build a roundabout 3m wider than is usually allowed.
She added "a number of studies" have been carried out, with a report on the findings due later this year.
