LEAFLETS detailing new Government regulations for private fostering are now available.

Private fostering is an arrangement made by the family of a child under 16 for he or she to be looked after for for more than 28 days by someone who is not a close relative.

The regulations now require the parents or the private foster carers to tell their council of the arrangements, whether they are planned or are already in place.

The council will then carry out a formal assessment, including a home visit and regular checks to make sure the arrangements are satisfactory.

There are three different leaflets available one for children and young people with private foster carers, one for professionals such as doctors and teachers and one aimed at parents and carers.

Bexley's child care unit must be notified at least six weeks in advance of any private fostering arrangements and if an arrangement is already in place, the council has to be told immediately.

Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £5,000 as well as a criminal record.
