MORE police officers are getting on their bikes in Lewisham than in any other outer London borough.
New statistics have revealed Lewisham has 64 police bicycles, putting it second only to Westminster in the capital.
The figures, released by the London Green Party, also show 27 officrs in Greenwich are using bikes.
Green London Assembly member Jenny Jones says other boroughs should be encouraged to follow Lewisham's example.
She said: "Bikes increase response times and are considerably cheaper and safer to run than police cars.
"It is a popular move with the officers themselves as well as the public who feel police on bikes are more in touch with the community."
