AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a man who fell 30ft while being chased by police in Bexleyheath town centre.
The dead man has now been identified as Nigerian-born Ayodele Adetiloye Fashogbon.
Detective Inspector Sean Szerezla, from the Met Police's Directorate of Professional Standards, told the inquest at Croydon Coroner's Court it had been difficult to establish 25-year-old Mr Fashogbon's identity.
Eventually police contacted his parents in Nigeria through his pay-as-you-go mobile phone and they had been able to supply officers with his name and age.
Det Insp Szerezla said police would now be taking DNA samples to Nigeria to match against Mr Fashogbon's parents to confirm his identity.
He told the inquest police had been called to an incident on a bus in Bexleyheath Broadway on the afternoon of November 14.
A man at the scene was challenged by police.
Det Insp Szerezla continued: "He immediately walked away and then ran towards Asda.
"One officer chased him on foot up a service ramp at the store but lost sight of him.
"A witness claimed she saw him later, falling from a wall about 30ft high."
He added: "Between the wall and the ground is a Perspex cover, which he jumped through, injuring a shopper."
He said Mr Fashogbon suffered head injuries and was taken to King's College Hospital, where he died the following day.
The inquest has been adjourned to a future date, which will be fixed when police investigations are complete.
