RESIDENTS who do not dispose of large pieces of rubbish legally could face fines of up to £5,000.
Under the Waste (Household Waste) Duty of Care Regulations 2005, anyone hired to take away rubbish must hold a valid Waste Carriers' Licence, issued by the Environment Agency.
Dartford Council is advising residents to ask to see a licence before paying someone to remove waste from their homes.
Otherwise they could be fined if the rubbish is found flytipped.
Dartford residents can get rid of bulky household waste for free at the Household Waste Recycling Centres at Dartford Heath or at Pepper Hill.
The council can also collect items for a small fee. For more information, call 01322 343290.
For more information about waste carrier licences or to check licence validation contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.
