PLANS to build flats on a former petrol station site once destined to become a drive-thru McDonald's restaurant have failed.
Bexley councillors have turned down a project by Hyder Homes and London and Quadrant Housing Trust to build a three-storey block of 22 flats on the land next to The Woodman pub, in Westwood Lane, Blackfen.
The site includes the shopping centre's former public toilets which were closed and sold off by the council, despite public protest against the closure.
Although there is support for housing on the site, Bexley's planning committee was unhappy with the height of the building and felt the scheme was an over-development of the site.
Members were also concerned about the lack of information on high voltage overhead power lines crossing the site from a nearby pylon and the mobile phone antenna on the pylon.
