MORE than a quarter of licensed businesses have applied to extend the hours in which they can sell alcohol.
Under the Licensing Act 2003, Bromley Council, not magistrates' courts, will grant businesses, including pubs and off-licences, permission to sell alcohol.
The law comes into effect today and of the 660 licenced premises in the borough, only two will sell alcohol around the clock.
These are the Tesco stores in Croydon Road and Elmers End.
In total, 162 businesses have applied to change their opening hours and the council will hear the applications in the new year.
The chairman of the licensing committee, Councillor Tony Owen, said: "Residents have the power to call for a review if the new hours prove unacceptable.
"But it is vital they provide firm evidence of public nuisance."
