MEDICS at a hospital emergency department have received national recognition for their hard work.
The A&E team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Stadium Road, Woolwich, was nominated for Emergency Team of the Year in the annual Hospital Doctor awards.
The members of the team, who made the final three on the awards shortlist, were praised by judges for "transforming" the performance of their department.
In the past four years the number of people using the A&E department has risen by 28 per cent, from 80,000 people in 2001 to 101,000 last year.
The department, which employs 120 staff, is led by consultant Dr Stephen Metcalf, who says he is "immensely proud" of his team.
He said: "The staff have done a fantastic job in meeting targets while making significant improvements to the running of our department."
The awards, which took place at the Hilton Hotel in central London, are organised every year by the magazine Hospital Doctor.
