ONE of Bexley's MPs has been nominated for the title of animal welfare champion of the Palace of Westminster.
It should come as no surprise Derek Conway, MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup, has animals close to heart.
Although he has a reputation as a Parliamentary bruiser, he was chief executive of Cats Protection during his years outside parliament.
The annual awards are made by ePolitix, the politics website.
Mr Conway is one of four nominated as the politician who has done the most in the past year to address animal welfare issues in Parliament.
He was nominated by the Dogs' Trust.
All MPs and peers can vote in the awards.
Mr Conway said: "My nomination came as quite a surprise."
