An investigation has been launched into the handling of the death of Ricky Reel who drowned in the Thames last October after an Asian disco at Options night club in Kingston.
The Police Compliants Authority (PCA) investigation was called by the police themselves following allegations by Mr Reel's family and pressure groups who suspect Ricky's death was linked to a dispute with two white youths.
But the head of Kingston Police, Superintendent Peter Lally, said he was convinced the inquiry would fully vindicate his officers.
He said: "There are no suspicious circumstances at all but because of the allegations we have asked the PCA to investigate.
"I am quite satisfied with police actions on this case."
Supt Lally said there were no suspicious marks on the body of Mr Reel when it was pulled from the river but his flies were undone.
He is convinced that Mr Reel went to relieve himself on the river bank and fell in, but was unable to get out because it was too steep and drowned.
But the detective heading the on-going inquiry into the death, Detective Superintendent Bob Moffat, has appealed for information about another incident that night.
He said: "Two white men were seen chasing an Asian youth. The youth was about 5ft 7in with slim build and was wearing a red shirt outside his trousers.
"These people may also be able to supply important information."
He also appealed for the two white men involved in the altercation with Ricky, who boarded a bus outside John Lewis, to come forward.
He promised their assistance would be treated in the strictest confidence.
New closed-circuit television footage shows Ricky walking along Wood Street towards the railway bridge at Downhall Road.
