A COUNCILLOR is calling for changes in the way Transport for London (TfL) notifies businesses about future roadworks.

The two-and-a-half month revamp of the A232, which was completed on Friday, badly affected traders along Glebe Way, Coney Hall.

Now Councillor Ann Manning is calling for TfL to give improved prior notification about future roadworks to protect shops.

Letters were sent to shop owners in Coney Hall on September 2, just three days before resurfacing works were due to start.

Cllr Manning has now submitted a motion to the council calling for TfL to ensure greater consultation with traders before carrying out work.

She said: "No business should suffer unduly from the effect of any roadworks, no matter how necessary those works are.

"The losses my traders have suffered are unacceptable and there is no guarantee trade will return."

According to letters sent to Cllr Manning, some businesses' takings were down by between £2,000 and £10,000 a week.

Food outlets such as Mexican restaurant Los Tacos and fish and chip shop Sea Dainties were down between £1,000 and £1,500 a week.

Sea Dainties owner Laifong Cheug said: "We really hope our trade will increase but it's still very quiet on some evenings."
