GRAVESHAM MP Adam Holloway has defended his decision not to back the Terrorism Bill in last week's Commons vote.
The Tory MP has received a number of "extremely angry" emails from constituents who were dismayed he voted for 28 days' detention without charge for terror suspects, rather than the government's proposed 90 days.
The former ITN reporter says he does not believe increasing the time limit to 90 days would achieve anything.
He emphasised security services need more British Muslims to be forthcoming with information and said extending the detention time would alienate them.
He said: "I would be quite happy to lock people up for much longer than 90 days, if it would achieve its aim of stopping an atrocity.
"But I just do not believe this measure would have made us any safer.
"We really do need to keep Britain's Muslims on side so they can let us know what is going on. They are our number-one ally in this terrorists don't care who they kill."
