A PENSIONER removed his wedding ring before hanging himself from a tree, an inquest has heard.
Gravesend Coroner's Court was told how Dennis Crothall, 76, was found hanging from a tree in woodland at Ifield Road, Shorne, by two passing youths.
Mr Crothall had left his home on Thong Lane, Gravesend, shortly after having lunch with wife Margaret on September 9.
He left his watch and wedding ring behind.
Hours later she reported him missing to police who later confirmed they had found him hanging by a thin white rope.
A piece of tree trunk was found close by and officers believe Mr Crothall used this to stand on.
Recording a narrative verdict, coroner Roger Hatch said: "There is no explanation as to why Mr Crothall took the action he did but it's quite clear in my view his intention was to take his own life."
Mrs Crothall, who married her husband in 1952, said he seemed downbeat on the day he committed suicide.
He had recently suffered from breathing problems but was generally in good health.
