A CHAIRMAN is warning a 39-year-old tradition will be lost forever if a community does not give its support.
Northfleet Carnival began entertaining revellers in 1966 but chairman Dave Taylor fears it will go under if new committee members are not found.
The committee currently has only seven members, five of whom are over 60.
Mr Taylor, of Coldharbour Road, Northfleet, said: "Everyone assumes it will happen year-in, year-out because it's been going for so long.
"But the committee members are getting on and I'm worried in the near future they will have to give up.
"If this happens it will either end up in the hands of the council or be lost forever.
"If the council get it I'm sure it would not last longer than a year it would be seen as a headache."
The father-of-two, who took over as chairman in October, wants to see residents come forward and pledge their support.
He said: I'm making a desperate plea to the community for help.
"If the public want the carnival to continue, we need their support during the whole year."
Volunteers could be asked to help with setting out stalls, making phone calls, preparing floats, lifting, driving or marshalling.
Mr Taylor, a lorry driver, who began helping-out with floats almost 20 years ago, added: "I think it would be a huge loss to the community if it came to an end.
"Charities make a few quid for their good causes and it brings a lot of people into the town who would not normally be there.
"Being involved is a lot of fun and anyone who volunteers will get a lot out of it."
