The Labour Group in Lambeth is celebrating after regaining a firm grip on their traditional heartland after four years lost in a hung council.
Labour gained 20 seats, resulting in a grand total of 41 Labour councillors, and now enjoys a comfortable overall majority of 18.
The Lib Dems lost seven seats so although they retain second place they have a depleted stock of 18 councillors.
The Tories took a hammering in the polls, they lost ten seats and are left with only four.
Bernard Gentry, the Tory Leader, was one of the casualties losing his Clapham town seat to a Labour new-comer.
Councillor Jim Dickson, Leader of Lambeth Labour Group, said: "People have recognised that Labour in Lambeth has completely transformed itself. They have given a ringing endorsement of new Labour's plans to transform the council. We will work with all political parties on the new Council to clean up the borough and turn round Lambeth's poor schools and housing."
Support for a London Mayor and Assembly was overwhelming with 81.8 per cent votes in favour and 18.2 per cent against but the turnout at 31 per cent was very low.

SOUTHWARK WINNERS 1998.
After a tightly fought election Southwark Council remains in Labour hands by the slimmest of margins.
Labour retained 33 seats but lost two and reduced their already narrow lead by two.
Lib Dems have maintained their position as second largest party with no change at 27 seats.
But the Tories were the only gainers with the modest addition of one seat bringing their total to four.
The referendum result showed overwhelming support for a Mayor and assembly for London with 80.7 per cent of the votes in favour and 19.3 per cent against.
But turnout was low with only 33 per cent of the Southwark electorate casting their vote.
