ISTEAD RISE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
We were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Mrs Barbara Gill who had been the current NFWI National Chairman, the singing of Jerusalem was dedicated to her memory.
The meeting continued with the business of our AGM. Well, what a busy lot we are at Istead Rise WI.
Mrs Lis, as retiring president, thanked all the members of the committee for their support and hard work during her term in office, especially the secretary, Cilla Herbert who was also standing down. Members gave a rousing applaud to show appreciation for their work. Pauline Scott agreed to be the new president and Eve Webb as secretary.
Mary Clarke, as the Federation Representative to oversee the evening, gave a very interesting talk on the 90 years history of the WI in the UK; from its start in Wales to be a source of education and a voice for women back in the very male dominated 1915.
We were raising awareness of the value of a correct diet for children long before the Government and TV chef's took it in hand. What the WI has to offer women and their community us just as relevant now as 90 years ago, not only do we have the chance to experience new ideas, learn new skills but we all appreciate the friends that we have all made from fellow members.
The Istead Rise Choir is participating in their annual Christmas concert along with the Northfleet Brass band at St Barnabas Church, Upper Avenue, Istead Rise at 7.30pm on December 10.
The next WI meeting is on December 13 at 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall, Lewis Road, and is an evening of festive music with Mr Downs, a buffet supper will be supplied by members - visitors are always welcome to join us.
