CRYSTAL PALACE 1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 0
With nothing at stake, managerless Palace took to the field before a below-average crowd for their last appearance of the season.
Marcus Bent partnered Neil Shipperley up-front with Andy Linighan defending alongside Herman Hreidarsson and Paul Warhurst. Although chances were few, Paolo Di Canio was a constant threat to the Eagles defence and on one occasion spectacularly beat four defenders before his subtle cross was blasted high and wide. Early in the second half Kevin Pressman was at his best to foil a spectacular effort from Edworthy, with a fine diving save.
A byline cross from Dean Gordon was missed by Bent and Shipperley before both Lombardo and Shipperley had goalbound shots blocked in quick suuccession. Caretaker manager Brian Sparrow sent on youngsters Anthony Folan and Clinton Morrison in the closing stages.
It was Morrison who was on hand to tap home a pullback from the man-of-the-match Lombardo and snatch a Palace victory in the final minute of a very disappointing season. BRIAN BARNETT
