Bury return to Selhurst Park tonight (Wednesday) with Palace hoping for a repeat of last week's 2-1 Worthington Cup win.
Although the Eagles still crashed out of the competition following a disastrous 3-0 first leg drubbing, an impressive performance lifted spirits in front of a pitiful crowd of just over 3,000.
Clinton Morrison found the net at both ends in an eventful game while the ever improving Fan Zhiyi scored his first goal for the club, netting the winner with 20 minutes left - with a scorching drive from 12 yards out.
Neil Warnock's men have enjoyed a brilliant start to the season and before Morrison's early strike £4m rated keeper Dean Kieley had not conceded a goal for more than 12 hours.
Currently eighth in the Nationwide League, despite Saturday's 1-0 setback at Wolves, Bury have been the season's surprise team.
Based on hard work and organisation and bearing Neil Warnock's trademark long ball approach, Bury are certain to attempt to frustrate and grind down Palace with a typical defensive display.
Two of the goals that defeated Palace in the Cup at Gigg Lane came from corners, as did Bury's goal at Selhurst, and Venables will be eager to stop any repeat tonight.
To add salt to Palace's wounds, following the cup exit, Bury were handed a lucrative tie against Man-chester United in the next round.
