Al Phillips, the former British and Empire featherweight boxing champion, who lived at Sunningdale Close, Stanmore, died during the weekend, aged 79.
Known as the Aldgate Tiger, Al Phillips was one of the most exciting British fighters of the early post-war era.
Following a successful ring career he became a manager, with British heavyweight champion Brian London among his charges. He was also an agent.
Mr Phillips, who lived in Pangbourne Drive, Stanmore, before moving to Sunningdale Close, became a keen golfer, and was a member of the Stanmore club for many years.
It was a sad loss when his son Joey died in a boating accident.
The funeral service for Mr Phillips, who is survived by his widow Sissy and daughter Paula, took place at Cheshunt on Tuesday.
