STYLE throughout the ages is on display as part of a new exhibition at the newly-opened Redbridge Museum.

Century of Style features around 35 different outfits over the last 100 years.

The clothes, most of which are loaned to the museum by residents, are also unique in that they were all worn for a special occasion or night out.

A Victorian evening dress and an Edwardian gown are on display, and it then goes down the decades, visiting the roaring 1920s, war-torn 30s and 40s and into the teddy-boy era of the 1950s.

There are garments from the stylish 60s and funky outfits from the colourful 1970s.

Clothes of the present day include a Muslim wedding outfit and clubbing clothes worn by teenagers. One resident sent in a black spangled-style dress that she wore on millennium eve night 1999.

Museum officer Laura Williams said: It's a really colourful and interesting display. We've had a thousand or so visitors already.

It's also nice that most of the outfits have been lent to us by residents, many of whom had a story to tell about the outfits and a photograph of when they wore it. We also worked closely with youth groups, to get an exact idea of what young people wear today.

Century of Style is at the Redbridge Museum, third floor of the Central Library, Clements Road in Ilford. It runs until September 29. Opening times are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
