I have just witnessed the most appalling act of vandalism that I have yet seen in Hampton: Namely the destruction of a young oak tree in Oak Avenue. A friend and I have attempted to stake and tie this young tree in the hope that it might recover. I just cannot imagine what drives these young thugs do such an evil thing.

I, like all decent people, am appalled by these groups of louts defacing our towns with graffiti and other such anti-social acts, and am of the opinion that such behaviour leads to truancy, unemployment, poverty and crime.

Yet we are being failed by a justice system which shows continuing leniency to these young criminals, while at the same time shows little compassion to those of us who may occasionally transgress in a motor car.
