A memorial service to commemorate the bombing of Balham underground station during World War Two will be held at Balham Station on October 14.

The tragedy, which claimed 64 lives, was the single worst loss of life in Wandsworth during the war.

The service will mark to the day the 60th anniversary of the bombing.

On October 14, 1940, a Luftwaffe bomb hit Balham High Road and blew a hole in the roof of the underground, severing water, gas and sewage pipes and bringing tons of rubble and debris onto those sheltering in the station.

The damage and devastation to the station were so bad that the last of the bodies could not be removed until Christmas and the line did not run again until January 1941.

The service will be conducted by representatives from the Anglican, Methodist, Baptist and Roman Catholic churches at 9.30am.

Those wishing to attend are being asked to gather outside the station at 8.50am. A procession will then make its way to the commemorative plaque on the station concourse where the service will take place.
