If anything, Paul Hardy (Guardian, September 28) is too kind about the new ticket machines as they are symptomatic of much that is wrong with transport systems today.

They may have a wider range of destinations, but they don't allow users to purchase discounted tickets - using a Network card for example - and you only find this out after queuing!

I suspect this means discounts of this sort may soon disappear.

Also, I pointed out to South West Trains that because machines at Putney face west, the display is impossible to read in bright light.

It promised to investigate but I heard nothing more.

Neither of these problems affected the older machines and it is interesting to see that they are still being used at Waterloo.
