THE East of England Development Agency has praised Continental Airlines' decision to provide a direct flight service from Stansted Airport to New York's Newark Airport.

The agency has revealed it worked in partnership with Stansted Airport this summer to help convince the world's sixth largest airline of the strong demand for a transatlantic service.

EEDA chief executive Bill Samuel said 400 business facilities in the east of England are US or Canadian owned, demonstrating the region's links with America.

He said: 'The international reputation of the biotechnology and hi-tech industries were an obvious draw for the airline.'

Continental Airlines has announced it will begin Boeing 757 flights from Stansted to New York on May 2 next year, departing at 9.30am and arriving at Newark Airport at 12.30pm.

The airline's 172-seat Boeing 757 aircraft will fly the route, which will give passengers access to a further 165 destinations throughout the Americas.

The return flight leaves New York at 7pm, arriving at 7.20am the next day.
