Organisers are putting the finishing touches to an annual festival which faced an uncertain future following a devastating fire almost two months ago.

When the Pavilion in the Harrow Recreation Ground was torched by arsonists at the end of May, plans for the Edwardian Tea in the Park almost went up in smoke as well.

The Recreation Ground Users' Association vowed the show would go on, although using the burnt out building was out of the question and £1,000 worth of tables and chairs stored inside had been destroyed.

Now, after a new venue has been secured inside the grounds on the putting green, the Tea will rise from the ashes to be held on Sunday, July 22.

Norma Cummings from the association said they were determined the festivities would not be marred by recent events.

"We are certainly not going to be beaten by the vandals. It is difficult but the Edwardian Tea will take place.

"It is fair to say that we are feeling a little bit down in the dumps at the moment because of the fire.

"A raffle on the day will be raising money to replace the tables that we lost in the pavilion and that's why we need as many people as possible to come along on the day," she said.

Members will be dressed up in Edwardian costumes to bring an elegant period atmosphere to the park.

Harrow Bowling Club, which also lost £3,000 worth of equipment in the fire, has agreed to supply electricity and water for the day.

A grateful Mrs Cummings added: "If it wasn't for them the Tea couldn't go ahead. Their support has been fantastic."

The event starts at 3pm and is free to attend.
