A CHURCH in Chingford will become the scene of two moving dramas next Wednesday and Thursday, November 21 and 22.

The Lions part theatre group (correct), will perform Lilies of the Land, based on the experiences of World War Two land girls, and A Sleep of Prisoners by Christopher Fry at St Anne's Church, Larkshall Road.

The first play was created on the basis of letters received from women who had been in the Land Army. Their memories included overalls full of mice, toilet rolls falling from the sky, swede bashing and five-inch baths.

A Sleep of Prisoners tells of four soldiers held captive in a church in an unknown country. In their sleep, they dream that they are characters from the Old Testament.

The passions, moral dilemmas and sacrifices of each biblical character is revealed, along with the hidden truths in the soldiers' own hearts.

The plays are being taken on tour throughout London by the Lions part, whose patron is Christopher Fry.

As part of their preparation for the second production, the actors talked with former prisoners of war at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

Performances will be at 4pm and 8pm on both days. Lilies of the Land is on Wednesday, November 21, and A Sleep of Prisoners on the following day. Tickets are £8 (concessions £5) and are available from 7483 4384.
