VOLUNTEERS are needed to play a valuable part in a new approach to tackling youth offending in Lewisham.
The youth offending panels, which come into force next April, will be made up of two volunteers and a member of the Youth Offending Team (YOT). First time young offenders who plead guilty will be referred to the panels by the youth courts.
Panel members will meet with the youngsters, their families and victims to draw up a contract, including repairing the harm done to both victim and community, as well as restrictions and activities to stop re-offending.
Lewisham deputy for community safety Councillor Les Eytle said: "We need local people of all ages and backgrounds to fill this essential role. We want the panels to be properly representative of the Lewisham communities."
The YOT is particularly keen to recruit 18 to 25 year olds, as they are likely to have a useful contribution to make in this area.
